Markdown straight from the source
Copying a ChatGPT answer by hand loses formatting and rarely survives a paste. ChatGPT Exporter reads the conversation from ChatGPT's own page data, so the Markdown you get is the Markdown ChatGPT produced, not a guess rebuilt from the page.
That is why timestamps and citations come out exactly. If reading the page data ever fails, the extension falls back to reading the page itself, so you still get a file.
What ends up in your .md file
Optional YAML front matter
Add a front matter block at the top of the file for static site generators and note-taking tools that read it.
Code blocks with language
Fenced code blocks keep their language tag, so syntax highlighting works wherever you open the file.
Tables, lists and links
Tables, nested lists, links and images are written as proper Markdown.
Numbered sources
Web-search citations become a numbered list of sources you can trace back.
Thought process
Include ChatGPT's reasoning when you want it, or leave it out.
LaTeX math
Equations are kept as LaTeX so they render in any Markdown editor that supports maths.
How to do it
Open the conversation
Go to the chat on chatgpt.com and click SELECT if you want only part of it.
Choose Markdown
Pick Markdown in the side panel or the EXPORT menu. Turn on front matter in settings if you want it.
Download the file
The .md file lands in your downloads folder, named with your file-name template.
Questions about this export
Can I include timestamps?
Yes. Per-message timestamps can be included, and they come from ChatGPT's own data so they are exact.
Can I copy Markdown instead of downloading a file?
Yes. Use the copy button to put the selection on your clipboard as Markdown. See the copy page for the other clipboard formats.
Does it work for long conversations?
Yes. You can export the whole chat or only the messages you select.
